Colored Contact Lenses - Lenses with ColorThere is an ever increasing variety of colored contact lenses available on the market today. Colored lenses can completely alter the colors of eyes, or can serve to enhance light or dark eye color. Colored contacts are available both as prescription lenses, or as non prescription. Those colored lenses that don't provide vision correction are called plano lenses. Special effects contacts are now available, offering a variety of colors, logos and other designs. Always talk to your eye care practitioner prior to wearing any special effects contacts, as there are serious safety concerns that must be addressed prior to wearing these 'wild' or 'crazy' contacts.
Like regular contact lenses, colored contacts need to be cleaned regularly. They should not be shared with other lens wearers. It is critical that colored contact lenses be properly fitted to your eye's vision needs and shape. Correct fitting is necessary to minimize the movement of lenses when blinking. Changes in pupil size at night may cause some limitation of vision in dark environments. As with regular contacts, colored lenses are available as disposable lenses, bifocals and toric lenses to address the needs of those with astigmatism.

The choice in colors for colored lenses in broad, including variations on the colors hazel, green, blue, gray, and amethyst. Only the outside edge of the lenses are colored, with the center of the lenses left clear for vision. Four main categories of colored contact lenses exist. They include; enhancement tint, opaque tint, light filtering tint, and visibility tint. 1) Enhancement Tint Colored Contacts These colored lenses are designed for the purpose of enhancing the eye's natural color. Those wanting to deepen or enhance natural eye color, not change it, are suited to enhancement tints. 2) Opaque Tint Lenses Opaque tints are designed to change eye color. These lenses are manufactured with many tiny colored dots on the lens to achieve the color change, mimicking the natural appearance of eye color, while the center of the lens is left clear for vision purposes. Special effect contacts, also known as theatrical lenses, fall into the opaque tint category. 3) Light Filtering Tinted Lenses These lenses are designed to enhance some colors, and subdue others. As the lenses of choice for many athletes, various types of light filtering contacts are available that provide different advantages, depending on the sport or activity involved. By filtering certain colors, athletes are assisted in following a puck, a golf ball, and so on. 4) Visibility Tint Lenses These lenses are not designed to change eye color. Rather, they are colored with light shades for the purpose of making it easier to insert and remove the lens into the eye. They are also easier to find if dropped or misplaced.
Those interested in colored lenses must understand that these contacts do have some limitations. Even when properly fitted, the colored portion of the lens can move over the pupil when blinking, negatively affecting vision. As well, the pupil of the eye naturally adjusts in size depending on light conditions. As a result, the pupil may enlarge in dark conditions to a size that is larger than clear center of the lens, negatively affecting vision. Designer lenses may present specific risks to vision health for some people. Never wear special effects lenses without first discussing your decision to do so with your eye doctor. Many very serious eye injuries have been reported with the use of these special effects lenses. People tend to share colored and special effects lenses with others more than with regular contact lenses. This is always a bad idea. Colored lenses are designed to fit your eyes, not your friends eyes. It is never a good idea to risk the transmission of bacteria that can cause serious eye infections from one person to another. Colored contact lenses can be safe, fun and provide excellent vision correction. As with other lenses, ensure that your colored contacts are properly fitted and that your colored lens prescription is kept current.
